Is college just a basic review of high school

Is college just a basic review of high school?
I know your major courses are different but I'm currently in my first semester and I'm paying hundreds on books and tuition just to learn correct grammar and 9th grade algebra all over again? Don't get me wrong I know the first year is general education but damn seriously, is it like this the whole first year?

this is why you should do general ed courses at a community college first before transferring to a university.

It could be that the courses you enrolled in are very basic. If you are scoring 100's on the tests, and ace-ing everything, request transfer to a higher class. College was nothing like High School for me. Every subject was challenging compared to High School, except Math, which was merely equal to High School (but our HS was renowned for Math).

You should have taken placement tests when you entered your school, and that test would tell the counselor what classes you are capable of learning. If you did not take a placement test, and you are studying below 100 series classes, then you need to ask if you can take the placement test to go to a higher class. You may have also misunderstood the counselor or whoever helped you choose the classes, but whatever, don't continue spending hundreds of dollars on something you don't need. Talk to someone about it, and get the classes you need. It may also be possible that they are just starting out slow so that if some of the classmates are there after not attending school for several years can remember and catch up, then the class may pick up speed later in the year, but this being already November, I doubt it.
